Division of Neurology

UCMG physicians in the Division of Neurology offer comprehensive clinical services in clinical pediatric neurology. Pediatric neurologists provide comprehensive, expert evaluation and treatment for problems in children involving the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord) or the peripheral nervous system (nerves, muscles and their connections). Common problems seen by pediatric neurologists include developmental disorders such as mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, language disorders; epilepsy of all types; neuromuscular diseases including muscular dystrophy, neuropathies, myasthenia gravis; neurogenetic conditions including degenerative diseases, leukodystrophies, and mitochondrial cytopathies; brain tumors; movement disorders; gait disorders and ataxias; and acute neurological management of head injuries, anoxic injuries, neurological infections, strokes, encephalitis, etc. Pediatric neurologists participate actively in both acute and chronic rehabilitation of neurological conditions in children. Division physicians have particular expertise in evaluation and management of children with paraneoplastic syndromes, particularly opsoclonus-ataxia due to neuroblastomas.

The Division of Neurology plays a key role in the multidisciplinary Neurosciences Group which offers diagnosis, treatment and consultation services to neurologists, pediatricians, family practitioners and neurosurgeons who care for children with neurologic disorders.

Description of Programs and Services

  • Childrens Comprehensive Epilepsy Program

The Childrens Comprehensive Epilepsy Program offers a multidisciplinary team approach to the care and support of children with epilepsy. Team members include pediatric neurologists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, nurse practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists and a speech pathologist.

Program members provide educational and psychosocial support for the child and the family, medical expertise for the management of seizures and state-of-the-art technology for diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. Prolonged EEG video monitoring of severe seizures is conducted in a two-bed EEG video telemetry unit.

Program members also provide data gathered from extensive diagnostic, medical, cognitive and psychosocial evaluations so referring physicians may continue to manage their patients effectively on a long-term basis.
