Division of Emergency Medicine and Transport

The Division of Emergency Medicine and Transport provides a broad spectrum of acute care outpatient services to infants, children and adolescents. Services include comprehensive emergency care, acute non-emergent care and neonatal and pediatric critical care transport services.

Description of Programs and Services

  • Trauma Center

Los Angeles County's only Level I Trauma Center devoted solely to pediatric cases, the CHLA Trauma Center recently was designated a Regional Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. It is one of only 12 facilities in the country to hold this designation.

  • Childrens Emergency Transport Program

Founded in 1987, the Childrens Emergency Transport Program provides specialized expert care for ill or critically injured neonates, infants and children. Dedicated teams of doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists, using specially designed ambulance, helicopter and fixed wing services, provide emergent, urgent and critical care to patients of all ages during transport. Transport physicians are board certified in pediatrics with experience and training in pediatric and neonatal critical care specialities. Nurses and respiratory therapists have additional training in transport medicine. Each year, the Transport Program coordinates more than 2,000 patient transports, including more than 1,500 full-team transports. While the majority of the transport patients come from the immediate community, many also come from all over the United States and Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the South Pacific.

  • Special Services and Facilities

Special services include an urgent care area, called Kids Care; care for patients with acute but non-emergent conditions, emergency child abuse evaluations and verbal and written communication with the referring physician for every patient visit. The Division's special facilities include a trauma resuscitation suite and respiratory care room.
