The Heart Institute at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) is a multidisciplinary program that is recognized worldwide as a leader in the treatment of pediatric heart disease. UCMG physicians in the The Heart Institute at CHLA provide comprehensive care to children of all ages - fetus through adolescent - who have congenital or acquired heart diseases.
Offering virtually every advanced diagnostic and treatment modality available today, The Heart Institute at CHLA encompasses Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Transplantation, Cardiothoracic Intensive Care and Cardiac Research. In addition, it is supported by all 32 pediatric specialities within UCMG. The Heart Institute at CHLA conveniently combines the best quality of care with a wide range of services.
Goals
The Heart Institute at CHLA goals are to:
- Provide comprehensive medical and surgical services to all patients;
- Offer consultation for congenital and acquired heart and lung disorders;
- Ensure that referring physicians participate in the care of their patients - from diagnosis to consultation to on-going patient care and management;
- Apply leading edge techniques to diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease in children;
- Develop new and greater knowledge of pediatric cardiac disease by

History
Cardiothoracic surgeons at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles have been leaders in pediatric cardiac care since the 1930's.
- In 1939, cardiothoracic surgeons at CHLA became the first center on the West Coast to perform pediatric heart surgery.
- In 1954, surgeons at CHLA pioneered pediatric open heart surgery in Southern California.
- In 1965, CHLA surgeons were the first on the West Coast to perform a successful surgical treatment for transposition of arteries.
- In 1993, CHLA and USC cardiothoracic surgeons performed the world's first double lung lobe transplant from living parents to their daughter, a CHLA cystic fibrosis patient.

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery features a dedicated surgical team considered by many to be one of the foremost pediatric cardiothoracic teams in the world. Programs and services in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery include:
- Neonatal Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Cardiothoracic Transplant
- Living Donor Lung Transplant
- Cardiothoracic Intensive Care
CHLA's 15-bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) is the only one on the West Coast for pediatric patients. It is available for all patients with cardiac disease and includes two positive-pressure and hepafiltered private rooms designed specifically for transplant patients.
- Childrens Emergency Transport Program
Part of the Division of Emergency Medicine and Transport, the Childrens Emergency Transport Program provides specialized expert care for ill and critically injured neonates, infants, children and adolescents. The program offers an array of services designed to transport patients safely, efficiently and quickly between facilities anywhere in the world by ground, helicopter or fixed wing aircraft. Dedicated teams of physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists provide emergent, urgent and critical care en route.
